Superstitions: Most prevalent among Trobrianders
The work of Malinowski immortalised the Trobrianders. One view was that the male and
female discharges
(vaginal fluid) are linked to an action of the bowels. There was total ignorance of the
physiological function of
the testes. Women were seen to have no testes, yet they produced momona, the sexual
secretion. The only
function of the testes was to make the penis look proper. In the most important Trobriander
myth a woman,
called Mitigis or Bolutukwa, mother of the legendary hero Tudava, lives alone in a grotto on
the seashore. One
day she is asleep under a dripping stalactyte. The drops of water pierce her vagina and deprive
her of her
virginity. In other such myths the means of piercing the hymen are not mentioned, but it is
often stated that the
ancestress had no male consort and so could not have had sexual intercourse (Malinowski,
"The Sexual Life of
Savages" pp. 156-6).
