Based on the unyielding premise that sexual happiness was the right of every person, it offended the Church, conservative medical opinion, reviewers and professional moralists. Inevitably there were publishing problems: two major publishers rejected the book - and Walter Blackie, who had published her "Journal from Japan" (1910), asked: "Don't you think you should wait publication until after the war at least? There will be few enough girls for the men to marry; and a book would frighten off the few." She is said to have replied:"What an idea of marriage you must have if you think the truth about it will frighten people off."
