Most abused sex book
Perhaps the most abused "sex book" in history was "Married Love" (1918) by
Marie Stopes. Based on the
unyielding premise that sexual happiness was the right of every person, it offended the Church,
conservative
medical opinion, reviewers and professional moralists. Inevitably there were publishing
problems: two major
publishers rejected the book - and Walter Blackie, who had published her "Journal from
Japan" (1910), asked:
"Don't you think you should wait publication until after the war at least? There will be few
enough girls for the
men to marry; and a book would frighten off the few." She is said to have replied:"What an
idea of marriage you
must have if you think the truth about it will frighten people off."
