Vasectomy: Most serious consequences
Vasectomy, like any other surgical operation, involves a number of risks. What follows must
be regarded as quite
exceptional and in no sense likely to occur in the vast bulk of vasectomies carried out in a
modern medical
environment. In the Gorakhpur vasectomy camp in India in 1972 there were at least fourteen
cases of tetanus
infection. This circumstance led to the first reported deaths due to vasectomy - eight of them
were described in
the Times of India. There can also be a number of allergic reactions. Also, the handling of the
structures of the
spermatic cord can lead to shock and even to cardiac arrest. In one such reported case prompt
resuscitation led
to the heart restarting and to full recovery. Mention has also been made of such things as
auto-immune conditions
and anaesthetic mishaps.
