Oral contraception: Most bizarre suggested consequences
Many strange occurrences have been laid at the door of the pill. Sometimes there are good
grounds for thinking
that oral contraception can have very strange effects on some women. One patient complained
that whenever
she turned over in bed, or sneezed, she could feel and hear something crackling in her chest. It
transpired that
her breastbone was loose - the doctor advised her to go off the pill! A Manchester dentist
found that a patient
with loose teeth was on the pill. One particularly bizarre finding was that women who were
taking the pill were
supplying green (!) blood plasma to the Leeds Regional Blood Transfusion Centre in 1968. A
case described in
the "British Medical Journal" indicated that the pill might be able to cause the
equivalent of St. Vitus's Dance.
