Only instances of sex role reversal
The feminists derive little comfort from a glance at the animal world, where male and female
roles are well
defined and where the sexes conform to traditional moves of activity, i.e. males tend to be
aggressive and
dominant and females more interested in rearing the young. There are of course exceptions to
this pattern. Female
insects are often larger and more vicious than their husbands, and even among higher animals
the "expected" sex
roles do not always obtain.
The female sea-horses actually possess a type of "penis", a
prolonged genital papilla
introduced into an opening in the male's abdominal sac. By this means the female introduces
her eggs into a brood
pouch in the male. Under this stimulation the male releases sperm into the pouch. The
fertilised eggs develop,
causing the abdomen of the "pregnant" father to swell enormously, until it is time for the male
to give birth!
Among birds the best known example of sex role reversal is the phalarope - the male sits on
the eggs while the
female goes out looking for food.
