It may seem odd that royal courts should have established their own brothels, but most of us
know that such was
done. Similarly, in our prudish times the idea of municipal brothels may appear somewhat
startling; but again we
know that such an arrangement was commonplace in times past. What is also interesting is
that the Armed Forces
made special provision for prostitution. Thus, in the Army and Navy Estimates of 1870-1871,
no less than
$110,000 was set aside for 2700 registered prostitutes in eighteen naval and military stations.
