The style is linked in its conventions to the illumination of manuscripts. The original Saint George is thought to have died about A.D. 300 at Lydda in Palestine. He seemingly assumed his role of a slayer of dragons from Perseus who slew a sea monster that had threatened the virgin Andromeda.
