Most comprehensive survey
The first Kinsey report - "Male", 1948 was based on detailed interviews held with
more than five thousand white
males; the second report - "Female", 1953 - was based on data gathered in the
same way for more than five
thousand females. In the Male volume it is pointed out (p.6) that "about 12,000 persons have
contributed history
to this study" Furthermore, this represents forty times as much material as was included in the
best of the
previous studies. Kinsey estimated that no less than 100,000 histories would have been
required to complete the
project - hence the dedication in the Male volume. There are no signs that any such figure will
ever be reached.
