Longest love songs
Many animals communicate to each other, generally for purposes of mating, with long
complex sound sequences.
Each sound sequence- in birds, insects, etc. may legitimately be termed a song, and what is
surprising is the
complexity of some of these compositions. Whales, for example, can "sing" to each other over
vast distances-
up to a hundred miles, the water carrying the great booming sounds. And a single
sound-sequence, i.e. a song,
can last for as long as thirty minutes without repetition. We are accustomed to whales
breaking anatomical
records in the animal kingdom. Perhaps we would less quickly think of them as proficient
songsters.
