The first sex-film club was the Compton in Old Compton Street; it opened in 1961 and was run by the former managers of a striptease club and a local cinema. The first films to be shown were based on nudist camps as locations - "The hero and heroine ended up holding hands and the sun set on yet another game of volleyball." The firm was eventually taken over by a large company and the name of the cinema was changed to Cinecenta.
