The best-known "girdles of chastity" still in existence are generally said to be those in the Cluny Museum in Paris. (See E. J. Dingwall, "The Girdle of Chastity"). One has a stout steel band, covered with velvet, and is adjustable. Beneath the front lock is a piece of convex ivory which, with an oval dentated opening, presses firmly against the vulva. This is dated to either the sixteenth or early seventeenth century. The second specimen is a finer device thought to be made in Germany in the early seventeenth century. It has two iron plates jointed together at their narrowest point, to one of which is attached two jointed iron bands for passing round the hips. Both the plates are engraved damascened, and picked out in gold. One carries a design showing Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Drilled holes were provided to allow velvet or silk coverings to be attached. Both belts give abundant evidence of high-quality workmanship.
