Countries least active in sex research

Of many countries we do not expect sex research - simply because such nations are too poor to fund such investigations (or because they are too pious).

Other countries, neither poor nor pious, have a surprising dearth of research effort into human sexuality. Of the Soviet Union, for example, Gebhard has remarked - "I know - and only by surname - of only two qualified persons interested in sex research: Milman, a Leningrad urologist, and Vasilcenko, a Moscow psychiatrist."

There have been rumours from time to time that Moscow was to create a new sex institute. East Germany apparently only boasts one or two serious sexologists: for instance the survey, organised by H. Rennert, via questionnaires distributed to male and female students in 1963, has been quoted by Kinsey.
